In order to meet the requirements of the program, the Directorate of Secondary Education of Messenia (DIDEM) organized trips with students from various schools (the 1st High School of Messini, the High School of Aristomeni, the High School of Paralias, the High School of Methoni and the 3rd High School of Kalamata) in the Peloponnese. About 100 students aged 13-17 participated in these courses.

Each group of students worked separately and in a different way. However, meetings were usually held outside school hours. Our goal was to include students coming from groups facing some social and economic problems such as: students with learning or financial difficulties, Roma students (from the 1st High School of Messini) or students from remote and small villages (the High School of Methoni).

Students were informed about the purpose and objectives of this program. Specifically, the terms cultural heritage, cultural sites and tourist route were analyzed. Then, with the brainstorming, there was a reference to the sights of Peloponnese that they would like to visit. A list of them was created.

The students were then informed about the selection criteria, divided into groups and undertaken information gathering through internet research and printed travel guides.

After the evaluation of the monuments was completed and according to the selection criteria and proximity of the monuments, the route was selected from each group. Then a site visit was organized and the pupils gathered more information.

Finally, the students were divided into groups and took over the presentation of each monument and they translated in English all documents. Their papers were presented and the information collected. Most pupils were working using Google drive docs.

WORKING METHOD OF EACH ROUTE

ROUTE: ON THE PATH OF THE OLYMPIANS

The students were asked what cultural heritage means to them and in what way they think they could be actively involved in its protection, maintenance and promotion. On a second level they were asked, through brainstorming, to come up with a list of monuments that they think are culturally representative of their area.

Stage 2: the youngsters, divided in work groups, were given the selection criteria, and through research collected information and formed a list of the proposed monuments of the route.

Stage 3: the monuments were evaluated and the route to Ileia was selected by them as one of the most representative of both the ancient Greek and the Modern Greek culture. A visit was made in the area, where the students collected firsthand information and feeling about the route.

ROUTE : KING NESTOR’S MYCENAEAN KINGDOM

Lower Secondary School of Aristomenis – 3rd grade

Coordinator: Revekka Skarpalezou – French teacher

When the program and the specifications of mAPP my Greece were presented to the students of the 3rd grade, we had already worked intensively on Messinian Mycenaean history due to local historical interest (three Mycenaean tombs in direct access from their school and houses) and their curriculum. In the initial brainstorm, we thought of the kingdom of Nestor in order to include ancient graves located nearby – which we didn’t include after all, due to the difficulty of access.

We concluded to study 4 places after the mapping evaluation procedure of the project and the final monument assessment tables and we agreed to work using a shared Google Drive document to overcome the barrier of distance between the different villages where the students live and the city of Kalamata where the teacher lives.

Exclusively web sites for text material and photographs were also used as it was impossible to make a site visit due to lack of sufficient time and financial resources. The students knew, from previous activities in the history lesson, how to find the appropriate websites of official and scientific organisations (the  Ephorate of Antiquities of Messenia, the Greek Ministry of Culture etc.) The teacher was responsible for the final format of information collected.

ROUTE 5: OLD AND MODERN SIGHTS OF LACONIA

Paralia’s High School of Kalamata – 3rd grade

Coordinator: Maria Stamatopoulou – Greek language and History teacher

The students who took part in the mapping process were 12,  from the 3rd Grade of the Paralias High School of Kalamata (15 years old).

Τhe methodology followed was:

At the first meeting, the students were informed of the purpose and objectives of this program. Specifically, the terms cultural heritage, cultural sites, and tourist route have been analyzed. Afterward, by brainstorming, Peloponnese sights which they would like to visit were reported. A list of them was formed.

At the 2nd workshop, students were informed of the selection criteria. The students were divided into groups and undertook to collect information by doing research on the internet and printed travel guides.

At the 3rd workshop the evaluation of the monuments was completed and according to the selection criteria and the proximity of the monuments, the specific route/itinerary was selected in the prefecture of Lakonia. Then a visit was organized in the area where the students collected another information.
